The short answer
An LLC is a US business structure created under state law. The IRS treats a one-member LLC as separate from its owner for tax only if you elect it. We found no official page saying an LLC gives you a Thai visa or work permit. IRS Publication 54 says self-employment tax rules are generally the same abroad. This is a short guide to the official basics, not tax or legal advice.
What an LLC is
The IRS says a limited liability company (LLC) is a business structure allowed by state law. The SBA says an LLC gives you benefits of both a corporation and a partnership. Each state sets its own rules.
How the IRS treats a one-member LLC
The IRS says an LLC with only one member is treated as an entity disregarded as separate from its owner. The exception is an LLC that files Form 8832. That form elects to treat the LLC as a corporation. Ask a tax adviser which fits your case.
Forming it at the state level
The SBA says most states ask you to register with the Secretary of State's office or a similar agency. A registered agent receives official papers and legal documents for your company. The SBA says the total cost to register is usually under $300. The amount varies by state and business structure.
We have not checked the fees or yearly filing rules of any one state. We don't review formation services on this page.
US taxes still apply abroad
IRS Publication 54 says the rules for paying self-employment tax are generally the same at home or abroad. The IRS says the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion lowers your regular income tax, but not your self-employment tax. Our moving checklist covers the filing basics.
Thai tax
The Thai Revenue Department taxes foreign income that a resident brings into Thailand. We didn't find a Thai page on how it treats income paid to a US LLC. Ask a tax adviser who knows both countries.
Does an LLC help with a Thai visa?
We found no official page that links an LLC to a Thai visa or a work permit. Each visa lists its own documents. Read our DTV requirements first, then confirm with your Thai embassy.
What we could not confirm
- IRS rules for an LLC owner who lives abroad. We found no IRS page that speaks to this. Search summaries point to Forms 5472 and 8858, which are for foreign-owned or foreign-organized entities. We can't say whether either applies to a US citizen's LLC.
- State fees and yearly reports. The SBA page has no date and gives a range only. We checked no state.
- How Thailand treats a US LLC. Not covered by any official page we found.
- The IRS page on self-employment tax abroad. It did not load, so we rely on Publication 54.

Questions people ask
What is an LLC?
The IRS says a limited liability company is a business structure allowed by state statute. The SBA says it lets you take advantage of the benefits of both the corporation and partnership business structures. Each state sets its own rules, so check the state where you plan to form one before you file.
Does an LLC mean you pay no US tax while abroad?
No source we read says that. IRS Publication 54 says self-employment tax rules are generally the same abroad. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion will not reduce self-employment tax. A one-member LLC is disregarded by default, so ask a tax adviser how your income is reported.
How much does it cost to form an LLC?
The SBA says that in most cases the total cost to register your business will be less than $300. It adds that the amount varies by state and business structure. We have not checked any one state's fees, so look at the fee page of the state where you plan to file.
Do you need a registered agent?
The SBA says a registered agent receives official papers and legal documents on behalf of your company. It also says most states require you to register with the Secretary of State's office or a similar agency. Rules differ by state, so check the state where you form the LLC.
Does an LLC get you a Thai visa?
We found no official page that links an LLC to a Thai visa. The DTV, retirement and teaching visas each list their own documents. Read the requirements on our visa pages, and confirm them with the Thai embassy or consulate that will handle your application.
Verdict
An LLC is a state-level business structure, and the IRS treats a one-member LLC as separate from its owner only if you elect it. It does not remove US self-employment tax, and we found no official page that ties it to a Thai visa. The official sources are thin on owners who live abroad, so a tax adviser who knows both countries is worth the cost before you form one.
